Steve Morton - Brief Biography

When I first encountered the SAS® system in 1981, I already had several years IT experience in management information, systems management and application development. Since that time, all my work has involved SAS in some way!

Joining the then-new European SAS Institute operation, I founded and grew the UK technical support and customer services team over many years. Along the way, I performed almost every technical role, from customer support and education, through application system design and development, to management of the technical division.

From the early 1990's I have concentrated on the best use of SAS technologies for data warehouse and related systems, with an emphasis on efficient processing and the use of tools and metadata for low-maintenance systems. This has involved planning, architecture and design for several projects, and technical review and advice for many more.

Since 1997 I have worked as an independent consultant, specialising in SAS-based data warehouse and data mart architecture planning, design and performance improvement, and the use of software tools in data warehousing. I continue to keep my SAS technical skills up to date, I am a SAS® Certified Professional and have been researching and using SAS 9 since its release in 2004.

From mid-2000 onwards I have written and presented data warehouse architecture, design and methodology training for SAS International and in 2002 I was invited to take part in workshops to formalise the skills and understanding required for SAS data warehouse architects and implementation specialists. Working with other data warehousing experts from SAS Institute and consulting partners from around the world, we defined the SAS data warehouse skill certification tests now used as part of the SAS Certified Professional programme. As would be expected I have also passed the latest examinations as a SAS Certified Warehouse Architect.

In recent years I have been a domain expert contributing to SAS’s Industry Intelligence Solutions for Insurance and Telecommunications industries, while continuing to support customer projects through assessment, review, planning and design work.

I continue to find solving the challenges of data warehousing a stimulating experience, and enjoy applying my skills to these to meet a wide range of business needs.

If my experience and skills can be of service to you on your data warehousing project, please contact me - see the About Us section of this website, or email me: steve.morton@appliedsystem.co.uk .
